CODE: 18th September
Make a lampshade in your own choice of design, colours and fabrics!
Use any of my kits or create your own. Last ever lampshade workshop!
(If you have paid in full and your course was cancelled please book a new course but click pay off line then in the messages let me know your course was cancelled).
On this course you will spend the day in my home in the Staffordshire countryside creating a beautiful lampshade inspired by British wildlife and my handmade textile pieces. Lampshade kits will be supplied and this includes the frames and the backing fabric to make your shade. A range of appliqué fabrics will also be included. You can create your lampshade for either a lampbase or for a ceiling light and the finished lampshade measures 20cm x 20cm.
I will be teaching a variety of techniques that you will be able to use to create your unique design. If you want to bring your own design ideas, please do so, or you're welcome to use the hand-drawn templates that I use to create my own designs.
See the photos for examples of lovely work from previous workshop participants.
This is an intermediate workshop so is suitable for those who have already completed the Flowers and Grasses course. If you are new to free motion embroidery I would recommend the Flowers and Grasses Workshop to start with. You will need to feel fairly confident using your machine to 'draw' with as we won't spend much time on the basics - we'll launch straight in to creating samples for your lampshade, and then your finished piece!
You will spend the morning learning different techniques from my demonstrations, then putting them into practice. After lunch you will make your finished piece. Once you've stitched out your unique creation, you will then spend the last hour of the day making it up into a lampshade. A detailed handout with photographs will also be provided.
This workshop will run from 10am until 4pm so please also bring a packed lunch, snacks and drinks.
What previous participants say:
"I enjoyed learning different sewing skills that I have never tried before, and which I want to practise again, in particular the 'free sewing ' on the lampshades."
"Friendly atmosphere, clear instruction and encouragement from Jo. I felt filled with confidence, and as a result produced something I was surprised I was so pleased with!"
"A really lovely day. Jo was so generous with her materials, ideas and expertise. The pace of the day was just right and I managed to produce 2 pieces which I'm really pleased with. Even though I've done free motion machine embroidery before, I learnt so much about different techniques, materials and processes - and Jo made it all look so easy!"
What to bring - please read!
Please bring your sewing machine, general sewing kit, packed lunch, sharp scissors and an embroidery hoop measuring 7" or 8" in diameter and 1cm deep.
Embroidery hoops are available to purchase when you book your workshop place and will be given out on the day. They are £3.50 each - please select 'Embroidery Hoop' below.
If you want to bring your own design ideas please do so. You will also need to have a sewing machine where the feed dogs can be lowered to enable free-motion stitching, as well as a darning/embroidery foot for your machine.
If you don't have a sewing machine, you are welcome to rent one for £10; please select 'Rent a Sewing Machine' below.
All fabrics will be supplied but feel free to bring your own thin fabrics if you have a particular colour scheme in mind. Thin fabrics include cottons such as patchwork and quilting fabrics or shirt material.
A general sewing kit comprises spare bobbins, spare needles (machine and hand sewing), threads, small scissors for cutting thread, pins and a tape measure.
I have a supply of fabrics, threads and design ideas that you will be welcome to use!
All workshops take place in my house, in the countryside in Whitgreave, just outside of Stafford (a five minute drive from Junction 14 of the M6) and run from 10.00am until 4.00pm. My postcode is ST18 9SP and house is 'Pine Ridge'.
Places on each workshop are limited to six so that I am able to spend as much time with each workshop participant as possible and we can socially distance. You will get the chance to look at my studio in the garden and purchase products or fabrics.
You will benefit from tailored, small group tuition and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.
Due to corona virus I will accept cancellations if you are feeling unwell.
Please do not attend a workshop if you are showing any symptoms or family members are.
You will be able to swap to another workshop when you are well.
I will cancel a workshop if me or a family member is showing any symptoms.
