CODE: 23rd JANUARY > OUT OF STOCK IN STOCK
Make a lampshade in your own choice of design, colours and fabrics!
On this course you will spend the day in my lovely garden studio in Staffordshire creating a beautiful lampshade measuring 20cm x 20cm. Lampshade kits will be supplied and this includes the frames and the backing fabric to make your shade.
Experience of doing some free motion embroidery is useful but not essential as I will be teaching a variety of techniques that you will be able to use to create your unique design, inspired by British wildlife and my handmade textile pieces.
See the photos for examples of lovely work from previous workshop participants.
Free motion embroidery is an exciting technique where you are able to 'draw' with the sewing machine by lowering the feed dogs and moving the fabric around under the needle. This is a technique that I have really refined over the years and I use it in all my textile pieces. I have a lot of experience in free-motion embroidery and you will learn how to use the sewing machine to its full potential - you'll be amazed at the results!
You will spend the morning learning different techniques from my demonstrations, then putting them into practice. After lunch you will make your finished piece. Once you've stitched out your unique creation, you will then spend the last hour of the day making it up into a lampshade. A detailed handout with photographs will also be provided.
What previous participants say:
"I enjoyed learning different sewing skills that I have never tried before, and which I want to practise again, in particular the 'free sewing ' on the lampshades."
"Friendly atmosphere, clear instruction and encouragement from Jo. I felt filled with confidence, and as a result produced something I was surprised I was so pleased with!"
What to bring - please read!
Please bring your sewing machine, general sewing kit, sharp scissors and an embroidery hoop. If you want to bring your own design ideas please do so. You will also need to have a sewing machine where the feed dogs can be lowered to enable free-motion stitching, as well as a darning/embroidery foot for your machine.
All fabrics will be supplied but feel free to bring your own thin fabrics if you have a particular colour scheme in mind. Thin fabrics include cottons such as patchwork and quilting fabrics or shirt material.
If you don't have a sewing machine, you are welcome to rent one for £5.00, please select 'Rent a Sewing Machine' below.
A general sewing kit comprises spare bobbins, spare needles (machine and hand sewing), threads, small scissors for cutting thread, pins and a tape measure.
I have a supply of fabrics, threads and design ideas that you will be welcome to use!
This workshop will run from 10am until 4pm so please also bring a packed lunch. Hot drinks and cake will be supplied throughout the day!
Important information about the weather: Please note that this workshop will run only if the weather allows. If it is likely to snow, making accessibility to the village too difficult, I will contact you by phone (so please make sure you leave your phone number at checkout) the evening before the workshop to arrange an alternative workshop date. You will be offered a choice of dates for workshops of the same description (i.e. lampshade making) to be taken at any point during 2018. If it snows and accessibility to the village from the surrounding towns (Stafford/Stone/Eccleshall) is fine and the workshop goes ahead, yet you are not able to travel from your location, then I'm afraid I will not be able to refund or re-arrange the workshop.
Places on the workshop are fully refundable if cancelled up to one month before the date of the workshop. If you need to cancel after that, you may do so up to 7 days before the date of the workshop at which point a full refund can be given in the event that I am able to sell the place. No refunds will be given if cancelled 7 days or less before the workshop.
