Interpreting a Paper Image in Fabric on Tuesday 9th October

CODE: 9th OCTOBER > OUT OF STOCK IN STOCK

Learn how to turn your photograph into a beautiful textile design!

On this course you will spend the day in my lovely garden studio in Staffordshire learning how to transform an image of your choice into fabric. You'll then take your unique piece home at the end of the day.

This workshop is an intermediate workshop and is suitable for those who have experience of free-motion embroidery - for example you may have already attended one of my free motion embroidery workshops and have had some subsequent practice with this technique so that you are fairly confident with it.

About the course

You will need to bring your own image with you - this could be a landscape, wildlife, flowers... There are many possibilities but the simpler the image, the easier it will be and you will have more success with your piece. Your image will ideally be A3 - printing out two halves on two sheets of A4 then joining them together with sellotape is the easiest way of achieving this. Alternatively you could print out your image onto A4 then enlarge it to A3 on a photocopier (local libraries can often do this for a small fee).

Please see the photos for an example I have created from a photo I took on holiday. You will learn lots of tips and techniques to help you learn how to take an image and produce a beautiful textile piece.

Depending on the complexity of your image, it may be necessary to finish it off at home. You will leave the workshop feeling confident to achieve this and then complete further pieces at your leisure!

I have a huge stash of fabric that you'll be welcome to rifle through, however if you want to match a specific colour I'd recommend obtaining the fabric in advance. I will supply the plain backing fabric for your piece (this won't be seen when you've finished your design).

What to bring - please read!

Please bring your sewing machine, general sewing kit, sharp scissors and an embroidery hoop measuring 7" or 8" in diameter and 1cm deep. Embroidery hoops will be available to purchase at the workshop (subject to availability) at £3.50 each.

You will also need to have a sewing machine where the feed dogs can be lowered to enable free-motion stitching,

If you don't have a sewing machine, you are welcome to rent one for £5.00; please select 'Rent a Sewing Machine' below.

A general sewing kit comprises spare bobbins, spare needles (machine and hand sewing), thread, small scissors for cutting thread, pins and a tape measure.

This workshop will run from 10am until 4pm so please also bring a packed lunch. Hot drinks and cake will be supplied throughout the day!

Workshop students are also entitled to 10% off any item of printed homewares (cushions, cards, lampshades, bags, coasters, placemats and chopping boards) purchased on the day of the workshop.

Places on the workshop are refundable in full less a 10% PayPal admin fee, if cancelled up to one month before the date of the workshop. If you need to cancel after that, you may do so up to 7 days before the date of the workshop at which point a full refund (less 10%) can be given in the event that I am able to sell the place. No refunds will be given if cancelled 7 days or fewer before the workshop.

Free motion embroidery is an exciting technique where you are able to 'draw' with the sewing machine by lowering the feed dogs and moving the fabric around under the needle. This is a technique that I have really refined over the years and I use it in all my textile pieces. I have a lot of experience in free-motion embroidery and you will learn how to use the sewing machine to its full potential - you'll be amazed at the results!
