CODE: 27th FEB > OUT OF STOCK IN STOCK
Would you like to have a go at fabric painting but not sure where to start? In this workshop you'll learn three different techniques to create your own hand-painted textile piece.
This workshop is an introduction to fabric painting. You'll also be completing your design using free motion embroidery. Since this technique is an integral part of the piece, it would be best for you to be fairly confident with free motion embroidery as I won't be teaching specific free motion techniques. This workshop is an ideal follow-on from the Garden Birds, Wading Birds etc workshops.
If you are new to free motion embroidery I would recommend the Flowers and Grasses Workshop to start with. You will need to feel fairly confident using your machine to 'draw' with as we won't spend much time on the basics - we'll launch straight in to creating samples, and then your finished piece!
I will be teaching a variety of techniques that you will be able to use to create your unique design, inspired by British wildlife and my handmade textile pieces.
About the course
You will spend the morning learning different techniques from my demonstrations, then putting them into practice. After lunch you will make your finished pieces. A detailed handout with photographs will also be provided.
This workshop is limited to four people so there will be lots of space to get creative!
Have a read of what previous participants say about other workshops:
"I enjoyed learning different sewing skills that I have never tried before, and which I want to practise again, in particular the 'free sewing ' on the lampshades."
"Friendly atmosphere, clear instruction and encouragement from Jo. I felt filled with confidence, and as a result produced something I was surprised I was so pleased with!"
"A really lovely day. Jo was so generous with her materials, ideas and expertise. The pace of the day was just right and I managed to produce 2 pieces which I'm really pleased with. Even though I've done free motion machine embroidery before, I learnt so much about different techniques, materials and processes - and Jo made it all look so easy! "
What to bring - please read!
Please bring your sewing machine, general sewing kit, sharp scissors and an embroidery hoop measuring 7" or 8" in diameter and 1cm deep. Embroidery hoops will be available to purchase at the workshop (subject to availability) at £3.50 each.
Please also bring an apron and/or clothes that you won't mind getting paint splashes on. Optional extras: any paintbrushes that you have (small, medium, large), a cork board for pinning fabric onto.
If you want to bring your own design ideas please do so. You will also need to have a sewing machine where the feed dogs can be lowered to enable free-motion stitching, as well as a darning/embroidery foot for your machine.
All fabrics will be supplied but feel free to bring your own thin fabrics if you have a particular colour scheme in mind. Thin fabrics include cottons such as patchwork and quilting fabrics or shirt material.
If you don't have a sewing machine, you are welcome to rent one for £5.00, please select 'Rent a Sewing Machine' below.
A general sewing kit comprises spare bobbins, spare needles (machine and hand sewing), threads, small scissors for cutting thread, pins and a tape measure.
I have a supply of fabrics, threads and design ideas that you will be welcome to use!
This workshop will run from 10am until 4pm so please also bring a packed lunch. Hot drinks and cake will be supplied throughout the day!
Workshop students are also entitled to 10% off any item of printed homewares (cushions, cards, lampshades, bags, coasters, placemats and chopping boards) purchased on the day of the workshop.
A note about the weather: if it snows, making accessibility to the village difficult, we will cancel the workshop and you'll be able to transfer on to any other workshop of your choice during 2019. We'll phone/email you either the night before or first thing if so. If the weather is fine here but you are not able to attend the workshop then the terms below will apply.
Places on the workshop are refundable in full less a 10% PayPal admin fee, if cancelled up to one month before the date of the workshop. If you need to cancel after that, you may do so up to 7 days before the date of the workshop at which point a full refund (less 10%) can be given in the event that I am able to sell the place. No refunds will be given if cancelled 7 days or fewer before the workshop.
